Chowpatti, 1035 South Arlington Hts Road (north of Golf, 1/2 block south of Central), Alington Hts, IL 847.640.9554
hours: 11:30am-9pm Tuesday-Saturday.

I was speaking to the daughter of the founder (her father died in March 2000), She mentioned that they would be closing sometime this year. When I asked for specifics, she said all they (her and her mom) knew is that they would close this year sometime. It is a shame because Chowpatti is the only vegetarian restaurant I know of in the NW suburbs and is a good one at that. I'm a confirmed carnivore, but the food at Chowpatti is very good and very satisfying (something I don't find w/the majority of vegetarian restaurants I've visited).

Start out with Indian Nachos, called SEV BATATA PURI which are six crispy chips (whole wheat is the original kind, but now they offer corn) topped w/potatoes, onion, cilantro and three chutneys (Garlic, Hot and Sweet). All three chutneys are combined to your request of spice level and then topped w/sev (crunchy chickpea noodles).Served Cold. Chowpatti offers the nachos three different ways: Basic (above), w/Dahi (homemade whipped yogurt), or Loaded (IMO the best way) topped w/Dahi and finely chopped cucumber and tomatoes. These put regular nachos to shame! Delicious!

Two of my favorite main courses are Spicy Masala Dosa and the Masala Uttapam.

The Masala Dosa is an Indian style crepe smothered w/a spicy golden chutney, made using green chilies.

The Masala Uttapam is a thick pancake made from a batter of rice/lentils. The Uttapam is then stuffed w/onions, potatoes, tomatoes, coriander, some cashews and raisins. YUM!!

If you are not comfortable ordering Indian or Middle Eastern food, don't worry the Menu at Chowpatti has almost text book like descriptions so you will know exactly what you are getting. You can also order mild spicyness if heat bothers you.

Service can be slow, but then it is usually the daughter waiting the tables and Mom cooking in back.

I urge you not to miss dining at a special restaurant in the NW suburbs.

Chowpatti plans to close at the end of the year 2002, but will close earlier if they get the price they want for their property.
