Went to Kamehachi today, more out of convenience than really wanting to go.
I did not realize this but Kamehachi claims to be Chicago’s first sushi restaurant.
I went to the Old Town location (Wells St). Kamehachi has three locations in Chicago, and I believe one is NYC and Tokyo. http://www.kamehachi.com/

Had 8 pieces of sushi and two oyster shooters.

The sushi was generally fresh, but seemed to lack something, namely much taste. Scallop even tasted a little off and they left the hard muscle piece on.

I must admit though, the last sushi I had was at Tojo’s in Vancouver, which was an epiphany, so it would be hard for almost any sushi restaurant to compare.

My friend was really gung ho for something called an oyster shooter. Basically an oyster shooter is served in a sherry glass. It consists of a raw oyster, a quail egg, tad amount of finely chopped scallions, little sake and little soy sauce. Pour the whole thing in your mouth and enjoy. While it was interesting, I found myself wishing for just a dozen raw.

Ah Kamehachi on Wells. Fantastic place 10 years ago.

For fresh sushi in the north side of Chicago, I think Shirohana is the best (in this price range).

Lower end but good is akai Hana on State and Delaware.

Mirai is really good. the fish is really fresh and the atmosphere funky.

if price isn't so much an object, places like Heat on Sedgwick are good.

Vancouver is tough to beat. Even places in asia have a tough time compared to Vancouver.

Fully agree, Tojo's in Vancouver was an epiphany for me and eating sushi. I purposely did not eat sushi in the Chicago area for a few months after Vancouver so I would not remember how disappointed I would be w/Chicago (or anywhere else) sushi.

FYI, did a review in the Western Canada forum about Tojo's
