What is your favorite Deli in the Chicagoland area?

I used to like the Dill Pickle downtown, though that was more of a restaurant, but had good sandwiches.
I like those Italian delis out by Oak Park, with the olives and prosciutto and parmesan wheels. Again, Meyer's on North Lincoln is great, and what about that Jewish deli across from Treasure Island? they have good Reubens...

Another good corned beef sandwich is Kaufman’s in Skokie. The downside IMO is it is small sandwich for the price. The upside are the usually very fresh bagels due to their bakery on premise. I REALLY like the chopped chiken liver at Kaufman's, some of the best in the area.

I never quite understood the fascination with Manny's, but then I have never been impressed with food that sits in a steamtable. However, a lot of people love it, so what do I know? And I would go there in a New York minute if invited there by my good bud, g_leyser!
Perry's has good sandwiches. However, I can make MUCH better potato salad, cole slaw and macaroni salad than they serve - IIRC, you get a choice with your sandwich and they are bad, bad, bad. :td: Get a bag of chips.

I've never seen the fascination with Perry's myself either. Some interesting concepts that sound good in theory, but not particularly good in actuality.

To me, part of the draw of Manny's is the overall scene as much as the food.
Wrt Perry's, I'll concede those salads are underwhelming. At least you won't go hungry with the sandwich size!

I liked the attempt at a cult of personality with Perry, and the lunchtime quizzes for those standing in line. But, for a place that spent so much energy designing sandwiches to look enormous and inviting, I never ate anything so tasteless.
I write the previous based on a thought that when I went by there recently it wasn't there -- can anyone confirm? If not, I'll be there Monday and take a look.
It's almost blasphemous to say it in the same breathe, but Manny's is a world better. I don't know if it would really stand up to what I know they've historically had in NY, but the beauty of the Manny's steamtable is really the pace at which food moves off of it. I doubt 'fresh' is the right word, but you can generally eat something steaming hot i.e. just cooked, etc. And the pastrami and corned beef are solid. As much as I've always loved the Northside places others have mentioned, they can't stand up to Manny's.

It's been a couple years since I've worked downtown so I've forgotten the name of the place but it is North of Madison on Franklin on the East side of the street - near Harold's Chicken. It's a deli run by Asians and though it doesn't have the personality of a Perry's, it does a good job.
BTW, has anyone won a free sandwhich at Perry's by correctly answering a quiz question?

The first time I went there, my co-worker and I just started blurting out answers after some guy (Perry?) asked a question out loud. I didn't realize that there was a proper way of answering the question and we almost got kicked out. Needless to say, the guy withdrew the offer for a free sandwhich and said there would be no more questions for the day due to the two idiots in the back. We got nasty looks the whole time we were there. :D

I have always liked Manny's. The corned beef is the genuine article, and a meat knish with gravy is an artery-clogging good time.
The Bagel in Skokie is OK in my book because you can get a tongue sandwich (my favorite). You aren't a real Jewish deli unless you serve tongue. Half sour pickles on the side, and I'm good to go.

More annoying to me are "Wonder bread" bagels - that is, bagels that are nothing but a soft roll with a hole in the middle. It hard to get a proper bagel (i.e., boiled, then baked) anywhere around here anymore. You might try The Bagel, 3107 N. Broadway. Otherwise, you may have to schlep to Skokie! :)
I've been lucky enough to have friends bring me bagels from Montreal twice in the last few months! ^

Ashkenaz descends from the deli of the same name originally located on Morse Avenue in Rogers Park, just West of the L station, back when Rogers Park was a very heavily Jewish area. The original was a huge place that was one of the centers of social activity in Rogers Park. There were several competitors on Morse, but Ashkenaz was by far the most popular.
Don't know how much of the old has carried over to the "new" place downtown.

Actually, the menu has Jerry's 100. However, they will make any sandwich you want in any combination you can think of for that same price, with a side. I went there for the first time today as it is just two blocks from my home. And this isn't your usual Subway crap meat. They have actual slices of roast chicken, roast salmon, etc. It was very good and I loved the chipotle chutney! It is a small place, but it has a large table right in the center just the right size for a Flyertalk luncheon and no further than Flat Top Grill. :)

The sandwiches were sure tasty today ^ ^
I had the "Diego A" sandwich which is: Steak, avocado, cilantro, cheddar, chipotle chutney, adobo sauce and chose the yummy chewy pretzel roll for the bread. Excellent.
I'd describe the steak at Jerry's as if you had a piece of leftover steak at home, sliced it up for a sandwich (so it's the real thing) but the great thing about Jerry's as opposed to being at one's home is Jerry's has a TON of toppings, condiments and bread choices. My mind was spinning with the combinations. the other sandwiches looked good as well.

I've been a big fan of Jerry's since I found out about it. Imagine my surprise when I ordered my favorite sandwich and a homemade cookie (they looked particularly good today) to go, expecting to pay $9.00 and the price was $10.25! If I had stayed in and had a drink, I'd have paid at least $11.75. That's a little steep for a sandwich at a place where you stand in line to order. Granted the sandwiches are great, and you get an unmemorable small side, but the new $8.75 price has to qualify as a rip off when you can get virtually any sandwich and home-made chips next door at Beer Bistro for less (and even a $2 burger on Tuesdays) and get waited on and watch sports on HD on several screens. It's not like the $7.50 previous price was exactly a deal.
My at least once a week business is no más. :(

Recently the mother of a Jewish buddy of mine passed away, she lived in Naperville, at the condolence meal/gettogether after the funeral, Schmaltz deli products were served, pastrami, corned beef, ruggelah, chopped chicken liver. Great stuff, got the big thumbs up from the contingent of NYC Jews (tough deli crowd) who were dining like there was no tomorrow.
