View Full Version : Favorite Pizza Toppings

Was talking to a guy who sold pizza ingredients and he mentioned some stats.

The Chicago area and to a limited extent, the Midwest, sausage is by far the #1 asked for topping on pizza. The rest of the nation the #1 ingredient is pepperoni, hands down.

I now know why I am sadly disappointed by sausage pizza elsewhere or why I can not find it outside the Midwest.

So what is your favorite pizza topping?

Mine:

Sausage (usually only ingredient)

Then
Mushrooms
Canadian bacon
Anchovies

In SF at MoMo's the Margherita pizza I ordered came in a glass rimmed with salt and two straws. It came along with the two glasses of red zin we had ordered. We pointed it out to the waiter, who struck his forehead and said loudly "Oh, sh*t!" Don't know what I would have gotten if I'd ordered pepperoni.

Usually all the meats, with bell peppers and onions, since no one really wants to make my favorite---anchovy and green olives. Apparently the anchovies make a particularly noxious and longlasting smoke when one falls off and hits the bottom of the pizza oven.

Ask her to reveal how she convinced "her" pizza person to make that combination for her."Carefully" is not a valid answer.

DEEP DISH is a must.

Then you add Sausage and Mushrooms to the crowd.

There is a sit down chain here that dows this pizza justice. It is called BJ's. Does BJ's exist outside of Los Angeles?

My favorite restaurant for pizza in the nation is Pizzaria Uno. When I was in DC, I ended up there 3 times in about a week. Their pizza crust is the best. They opened one in Los Angeles, but sadly, it never caught on. Are they still around?

Pizzeria Uno is around. Check http://www.pizzeriauno.com/ for locations. My favorite pizza is mine; I make my own once a week.

Favorite toppings are probably roasted red peppers and turkey pepperoni.

Me, too, but only if the sausage is cooked from fresh sausages - IMO, that's one of the problems with sausage pizza outside Chicago - the sausage is typically minced dry sausages and not as juicy. Also, Chicago's sausage has fennel, which is typically missing from sausage toppings elsewhere.

Lately, my favorite has been super thin (cracker) crust w/ no sauce, cheese, and tons of tomatoes, onions, garlic, and basil.

Also like spinach, mushroom, and red onion.

Some friends and I made our own pizza one night, carte blanche to add anything we want!

These are our ingredients after voting.

1) stir fried chicken with a hint of teriyaki sauce. ^ ^ ^
2) very little pepperoni, hopefully a non salted type.
3) honey ham
4) mushrooms
5) pineapples (I hated this)
6) green peppers
7) *very* little cheese

All on a thin crust. Best pizza I ever had. :)

Guess I like thin crust pizza. Dominos(!!!!) had a promotion recently with a special type of crust, that pizza rocked! Unos is way too much for me, and I'm near the original Unos, in chi-town.

Give me a great Chicago pizza place with a sausage, mushrooms, onion, and green pepper pizza, and I'm just fine.

Of course, I do prefer to do it at home. That's because I live in Houston now ... man, talk about your places with a dearth of great pizza. We've got a couple decent spots, but nothing that's blow-away good like Chicago or New Haven.

Very good, but I think that the white clam at Modern Apizza, also in New Haven, might be better.

Sausage
Mushroom
Anchovies
Fresh Chopped Garlic

OK, I admit it! This combo grosses out most people I know. But a few people I know really like it!

This combo was suggested to me by a close friend years ago, now deceased (not from the pizza). He called it the "Premisler Special," and I continue to call it that in his memory.

This pizza has a strong flavor and is very pungent. So, don't ever order it on a thin-crust. This combo of ingredients is strictly for deep-dish or stuffed pizza. Ginos East in Chicago does it best!

- Sausage and onions
- green peppers if they've been sauteed a little bit first (most places don't do this, I'll eat the raw ones but I won't order them on my own)
- salami (more often found in the thin individual pizzas in European cities)
- pepperoni instead of sausage on really cheap pizza like the pizza hut room service pizza or (heaven forbid) Domino's.

I love chorizo, but I'm not sure I'd like it on a pizza. I hate ground beef on a pizza, as well as any seafood or olive. It's been years since I've had Canadian bacon or roasted garlic on a pizza, but I'd probably like them as well.

Thin crust preferably in a stone oven or else on a pizza stone preheated very hot. Put the crust on for a few minutes until it bubbles up, then flip it. That way the crust stays crisp and not soggy.

Use plenty of gorgonzola cheese, bleu or roquefort is okay too, some mozzerella, parmesan whatever you have and after it browns put on the arugula aka rocket and enjoy!

Lou Malnati's Sausage Deep Dish. If I can't have that, the ideal toppings would be sazzeetch, pepperoni, green peppers & onions...-n- throw some of those red pepper flakes on top. Finish that off with a couple of ice cold beers in the recliner watching a Cubs game, and I can die right then and there.

I like the "old school" toppings, but I do love one exotic - the Peking Duck Pizza from CPK - duck, hoisin, leeks, and won ton chips.

Yum!

Favorite - NY style crust with extra cheese, Italian Sausage, and mushrooms and if you really want to kick it up a notch add fresh garlic to the mix.

As a close second a good Philly cheesteak pizza - chipped beef, onions, peppers, & provolone cheese on a NY style crust.

It really depends on where I'm having my pizza. As others have suggested, "mystery sausage" (i.e., sausage on a pizza outside of Chicago) can be problematic. Therefore, if I'm outside of Chicago, I'm not going to order sausage unless I know it to be good. So, it's gonna be pepperoni and green peppers (and mushroom and onions, if my eating companion(s) agree).

If I like the sausage, it'll be sausage and green peppers.

However, if I'm having thin crust pizza in NY, I'll just have cheese.

Two places where I only do veggie pizza because it is sooo good, are Harrod's pizzeria in London and Sopprafina in Chicago (a superthin crisp crust with spinach, red onion and mushroom).

I don't go for the weird California Pizza Kitchen ingredients like roasted potatoes, carmelized onions, etc.

Sometimes I'll try more exotic pizzas or go for various combinations but when in the mood for the perfect basic and traditional pizza it's gotta be just Italian sausage and mushrooms.

Mushrooms (must be juicy and chunky! I really don't like thin mushrooms)
Onions (Red kind)
Italian sausage and/or Pepperoni
Zucchini
Tomato sauce (of course!) and sundried tomatoes
Lemon Dill
Garlic
Basil
Mozzarella
And sometimes for a bit of variety, I like mango chutney with chicken on my pizza!
And a bit of cilantro to top it off (enhances with color and also very fragrant!)

Mmm.. yummy.. just thinking about pizza makes me so hungry now!

:( Too bad it's bed time already...

A thin-crust topped with a little bit of mozzarella, some good sweet italian sausage and chopped fresh ripe tomatoes with a sprinkling of fresh basil on top. Maybe, just a touch of arugula, as well. Toscana, in Brentwood gets it just right, but it is not on the menu. You have to ask for it.

Pineapple ^

My preferred toppings are Pineapple and Italian Sausage. There is something about good Italian Sausage that brings out the sweetness of the Pineapple.
