You just simply can't find a better deli in NYC than the Second Ave Deli at 10th & 2nd in the East Village!
Yes, it can be crowded and a bit noisy, but it is well worth it- especially the great pastrami sandwiches which are my favorite!

i really won't even get into the whole nyc deli debate with you right now seeing how i'm in the middle of finals.. but let it suffice to say that even though i lived a block away from the second ave. deli i would walk the half a mile to katz's to have a pastrami sandwich any day.. i do like the new decor in 2nd ave. but i don't think the fries are up to par.. but the soups are great..

If you are in Midtown, try MR. BROADWAY. It is located on Broadway between 37 & 38 streets. It's a great kosher deli, and is packed everyday. They even have kosher sushi. Also some really good Middle Eastern dishes.

Maybe "the best", but not my favorite!
Well, you know what they say about opinions, they're like ********, everyone has one.
Here's mine.
My favorite is Carnegie Deli, across from Carnegie Hall.
I love to dig into a big fat corned beef sandwich and theirs is my favorite anywhere in the US. Nothing like that here in SFO, where the local specialty is "corned beef on date nut bread with mayonnaise."
I think their cheesecake is the prototype of N.Y. cheesecake, too.
From the ancient servers to the great bowls of pickles they give you to the ridiculously huge portions, I love it all!
P.S. I do enjoy 2nd Avenue Deli very much also and they ship, which is very nice for us poor deli-deprived denizens of Northern California. I catered my New Year's Eve party from there a couple of years ago.
P.P.S. A friend took me to Katz's for the first time last year and I was very disappointed in the place. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing?

I love "2AD" as my friends and I refer to 2nd Avenue Deli. My usual order is: tscholent (sp.), matzo ball soup and a pastrami sandwich (lean, don't order the extra lean one).

These are all good .. you can't go wrong in any of them, but I also like the Carnegie Deli especially if you're in the midtown area.
I was back in NYC in October, and walked over to the Carnegie deli and ordered a corned beef/pastrami sandwich on rye with cole slaw to go. The person taking my order turned to the guy next to him and ordered "A Woody Allen on rye with cole slaw" and gave me a check to pay for the sandwich. It was around $12 as I recall. The sandwich weighed around 2 Lbs and I ate the entire thing that night.
The Carnegie Deli was the location for the "fake orgasm" scene where Meg Ryan faked an orgasm in a crowded NYC deli to show Billy Crystal how it could be done in "When Harry Met Sally". At the end of the scene an older woman said to the waiter "I'll have what she's having".
Years ago when I lived in the city, a tourist on a subway platform actually asked me "How do you get to Carnegie Hall", but that's another story.

Gentlemen,
As a New Yorker, it's Stage and Carnegie first. Then 2nd ave and Katz's.
