the European version of the Herald Tribune reports that due to the long waiting times, passengers spend a lot more money in the slot-machines at LAS than before.
The net-profit of all gaming-machines at LAS in the 2 months december 2001 and january 2002 was 1,5 Million$ higher than a year before.

One of the reasons I'm happy that Starwood doesn't have properties in LAS. Maybe one day they will once again, but the less times the better.
It's a stupid business to be in.

Wow, 1,5 Million $ more PROFIT in two months out of those machines.
With let's say 90% average payback and assuming that they have raised their profit 25-50% this would be a coin-in value of 30M$ to 60M$ (right?) in two months...!
How can I get a licence for bulding up slot machines at LAS? http://www.flyertalk.com/airports/ftairports_forum/wink.gif

If you are spending a lot of time in long lines, wouldn't that DECREASE the amount of time you have to gamble? At baggage check-in and at security there are NO slot machines. There are machines located between baggage check-in and security, and once you are clear of security.
Sure, if you go to the airport early and you find a short line -- THEN you have more time to play the machines. But if you are standing in line, then NO.
Not a bad idea tho'.... put a row of slot machines parallel to the security check-in line. One pull, then move forward to the next machine.
The license for the slot machines all belongs to one company (Coast Resorts, I think)

Once they're airside (often in much less than two hours) :) they have plenty of spare time they would not have otherwise had, and the slots provide a diversion.

Too bad the extra profits do not go to improvements in the A and B gates area. It seems only C and D deserve to look like they were made in the last 50 years.
McCarran is the only airport where it's normal to expect hearing "WHEEL -- OF -- F-O-R-T-U-N-E" while waiting for your next flight. Gotta love Las Vegas.
