(copied from my post in omni)

For any travellers through AMS, Atingo internet has a 2 month trial offering wireless internet. Just register at www.atingo.nl (http://www.atingo.nl) (free during the trial) and set your wireless card's network name to "ANY". Don't expect too much support, it took me half an hour to get the network name off them as they didn't know what I meant. After the trial they plan to make the wireless lan airport wide (it's now only in the central lounge) and will be offering it at around €30 per month.
I tried it and got internet speeds of around 2mbit/s, great if you need to do some really big downloads!

ScottC, all: Wireless at AMS. Great! I mentioned this to the Schiphol Group guys several months ago, suggesting that they do it at AMS and the new JFK Terminal 4. I assume that you mean the IEEE 802.11B standard. Right?

Are you sure you have that URL correct? I couldn't connect to this address.

Sorry, the link should be www.attingo.nl (http://www.attingo.nl)

Yes, it is IEEE 802.11 (formerly known as Wavelan Gold). I tested it with a Compaq WL110 card (Lucent built) and a Compaq WL100 (Intersil built). If you don't have a wireless card Attingo will lend you one (don't know about deposits etc...)

The current system is a single base station although there are plans to extend it into the terminal. This weekend I will be testing it again with a Compaq WL110 and range extending aerial, I hope this will reach far enough to let me internet in the BA lounge!

Thanks for the news! Sure beats GSM over Irda...
Do you know until when the free trial period is running?

I have spoken to them several times on this and they don't seem to know how long it will last, it seems to have something to do with setting up a working billing model for wireless (or the lack of a decent system..).

For the time being, just enjoy it while it lasts!

Paging ScottC... http://www.flyertalk.com/airports/ftairports_forum/smile.gif

You mentioned wireless access in the "D" lounge - is that an airline specific lounge or something available to all?

I'm still trying to decide whether I will be bringing my laptop - if I don't, is there an "internet cafe" reasonably priced in Schiphol, with computers to use?

The D lounge is just the D departure area, a large shopping zone in the middle of the complex. The internet place that offers the wireless also has 30 internet pc's and 6 mini offices you can use. The wireless is no longer free and now costs €9 per day.

Thanks ScottC :-)

First time to AMS and just trying to plan and know what to expect. I think 10 bucks is a steal for all-day wireless!

BTW: can I buy prepaid SIMs at AMS for reasonable cost? Or would it be better to use my .99/min T-mobile roaming?

It depends how much you'll be calling, prepaid kits usually run arounf €35 with €10 credit, if you never use it again you'll be wasting €25 which is 25 minutes roaming on T-mobile HOWEVER on pre-paid incoming calls are free for you and expensive for the caller...

Just in case you want to know, Prepaid sims can be bought at the Capi-Lux store in Schiphols "Plaza" shopping center.
