A veteran air traffic controller at San Francisco International Airport is now under indictment in a string of bank robberies.
Rick Lee Davis is named in a nine-count indictment handed down in Oakland yesterday by a federal grand jury.
The indictment says Davis netted $40,000 over 10 months from robberies in Fremont, Union City and Concord.
Police dubbed him the "Robust Robber" because of his stocky build.
Attorney Randy Sue Pollock says she has asked for an August 27th court date for her client, at which time he intends to plead innocent.
Davis told authorities he began robbing the banks to help pay to fly his children from Hawaii for visits.
The robbery spree ended August 3rd when an off-duty cop allegedly saw Davis robbing a Bank of America branch in Concord and arrested him outside the bank with about $3,200 in stolen cash.
Davis has been a Federal Aviation Administration employee since 1986 and was the local president for the National Air Traffic Controllers Association. He's now on unpaid suspension.
