US Transportation Secretary Norm Mineta will join San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales and other local leaders at today's opening ceremony for the new runway at San Jose International Airport.
The new 11,000-foot, $65 million runway 30R joins the airport's existing runway 30L. It will reduce airport delays and increase airport safety and efficiency, according to airport spokesman Steve Luckenbach.
The new runway is part of the airport's decade-long $2 billion Airport Improvement Program. The program includes a new passenger terminal, a new air cargo terminal, new parking facilities and numerous other improvements to the airport's facilities. Completion is expected by 2010, Luckenbach said.
The first flight is expected to depart using the new runway at 2:30 p.m.
