My mom told me that they closed the airport yesterday (10/08/01) because of some nut?

Apparently someone didn't want to be wanded when (s)he set of the metal detector at security ran into the terminal. Standard procedure after that (it's happened at other airports before) is to evacuate the terminal and aircraft, search the airside area, and then have everyone who is flying or working airside go back through security.
