New rail connections are making it possible to travel from Manhattan's Penn Station to Newark International Airport in New Jersey in about 30 minutes. A new train station, opened in late October, connects New Jersey Transit trains to the 1.9-mile Newark airport monorail. The monorail leaves every three minutes, taking 7 minutes to get to the closest terminal, Terminal C, and 10 minutes to the farthest, Terminal A.
Amtrak and New Jersey Transit trains operate a total of four times an hour in each direction on weekdays, and three times an hour on weekends, from 6 a.m.
to 9 p.m. There is less frequent service until 2 a.m. and none from 2 to 5 a. m. The one-way fare from Penn Station in New York to the airport is $11.15 on New Jersey Transit and $23 on Amtrak.
The new station, the last part of the $769 million monorail project, is financed with a $3 fee paid by departing airport passengers. Other thanthe New York service, a number of other New Jersey Transit trains stop at the new station. New Jersey Transit information is available at (973) 762-5100 and, in northern New Jersey, (800) 772-2222, or at www.njtransit.com. (http://www.njtransit.com.)
Amtrak information: (800) 872-7245; www.amtrak.com. (http://www.amtrak.com.)
A rail connection from JFK Airport to Jamaica Station, connecting with Long Island Railroad trains, subways and buses, is scheduled to open in late 2002. A subway or rail link to La Guardia Airport is also under discussion.
