View Full Version : The nightmare that is NY-LaGuardia

The last time I flew from LGA , which was about 5 months ago, we sat on the runway for an hour and fifteen minutes. Since then, my first choice has been Newark or Kennedy. I've read that the situation at LGA is getting a little better these days, but recent headlines confirm that it's still the nation's most delayed airport. I also read somewhere that there's little possiblity of expansion at LGA becuase of geography, and opposition from environmental groups. Supposedly, the MTA is "studying" the possibility of an AirTrain, like the one at JFK and the monorail at Newark, but who knows if it will ever become a reality. Does anyone who regularly uses LaGuardia feel that things are looking up, or is it just the Port Authority trying to spin us into believing that it is?

I always leave LGA at 6:00 AM on UA flight 699 to ORD. It's never late! :)

The Marine Air Terminal - where DL shuttle
run out off, is OK. I must admit that most
of my trips from MAT as well as main terminals are early in the morning - i.e between 6-7 AM, and similarly return is after 8 PM. IN these time slots, the delay is not noticeable.

I use LGA regularly, and I definitely feel that it has improved lately.

I've been using LGA on Continental and so far, the delays are no more than 15-20 minutes, so I'm quite satisfied. http://www.flyertalk.com/airports/ftairports_forum/smile.gif

I think you probably sat on a taxiway, not a runway for and hour and fifteen minutes :-)
I use LGA regularly and feel that all the media reports of delays, etc... are exagerated. While there are certainly occassional delays, they are no worse (if not better) than what I experience at EWR.
Things have certainly improved at LGA lately.

Well, yes, you're right, it was a taxiway, but it was still an hour and fifteen minute wait.
But from the replies above, it sounds like things are thankfully easing up a bit at LGA.

I fly out of LGA regularly, and have noticed that the most extreme delays are in the evening flights.
Things have certainly looked up lately, but some of that is also because a few airlines have added the delay time into the regular flight schedule. So what ends up happening is that inspite of the delays, flights end up being more or less on time- or early in some cases.

Also, I have become almost paranoid about making connections when I fly out of LGA and mostly give an hur and a half between flights at the connecting airports.

Last time I flew through LGA in May, one flight was an hour plus late. A week later,
it was seven hours late. (5 o'clock flight
left around midnight.)

I just made reservations a couple days ago. Even though there was a cheaper fare connecting through LGA, I didn't chose it. That's pretty much my response from now on.

LGA is only bad during the morning and evening rush hour periods. Two weeks ago I flew out of there at 2:30 pm and we were 10 minutes past our listed departure time. Also if you are on the first flights of the morning you usually leave on time.

I am an unabashed LGA hater, but in fairness, operations have improved markedly over the last few months. That doesn't mean flying into LaGuardia is pleasurable--far from it--but it is more tolerable. Still, I would take JFK anyday over LaGuardia or Newark.

LGA on-time rates are still hovering around 30%, but have improved since the FAA imposed take-off & landing restrictions a couple months ago.

Still, one puffy cloud in the morning causes delays all day!
