Recently had to travel to ORD from PSP (or any So Cal airport) on AA; missed 14-day advance purchase and was facing more than $600 for the tkt. Checking all airports found $220 fare on AA out of BUR. I assume this fare was due to BUR being major airport for Southwest and AA having to match Southwest.

I was wondering if others have found this to be the norm or did I just get lucky? (I'll drive a couple of hours to save $400 just about anytime.) thanks all.

It can really vary... I think one factor is that no one has non-stop service to ORD from BUR or ONT so WN is more directly competitive with one or two stops compared to pricing WN against non-stop service out of LAX.

I have found it to be the case, though it isn't always consistent.

Thanks, Kevin. I'll bet you're absolutely right. Looks like I'll continue to check fares out of BUR, as well as ONT, on any future flights. Now, if we could just get WN to come in and work their magic at PSP...

Of the five Los Angeles area airports (BUR-LAX-LGB-ONT-SNA), LAX usually has the best fares nine out of ten times. However, once in a while any of these other area airports will have a substantially better fare. I always compare fares and have flown out of BUR, LGB, ONT or SNA on occasion. I am located in the northern part of Orange County and fortunately any of those five airports will work for me.

Kev LAX, United has two nonstops daily between ONT and ORD.

I haven't flown that flight, but it looks there's an early AM and a noonish departure out of ONT to ORD. The return legs leave ORD noonish and around 7 PM.
