For an 18 month old in europe trip, I want to use a crib in the hotel room.
1. Do I need to request permission when I book
2. Which portable crib would you folks recommend?
3. Would it fit in a 26" bag?

TIA

From lots of experience...

Most portable cribs are really heavy - and while fold down fairly compact, they are luggage unto themselves. Don't bother.

Some hotels also have cribs or playpens - but depending on what part of the world you are in the age and safety standard may be dubious (e.g. in Dubai one hotel the crib was a safety hazard just to have in the room, whereas another hotel in Dubai has a wonderful, brandnew wooden one with beautiful linens to match).

Many hotels will provide cots, or extra beds, at no cost if they know it is for a child. With a cot or bed for a baby (e.g. one too young for such a thing), you can position it between your bed and the wall, so the wall holds the kid in on one side, and your bed (& you) hold the kid in on the other side. This way your space isn't invaded, but baby is safe and happy (most kids like sleeping next to mommy & daddy).

Happy trip!

Two other things to consider.
Most (but not all) Starwood Hotels have nice, safe cribs. You'll have to check ahead, but we have always found them easy to get.
In Italy last summer we "made" a crib for our then 1 year old by laying blankets in a large dresser drawer we removed from the dresser. It worked well for us.
Enjoy the trip

We carried a portable crib all over Europe and never had a hotel question the use.

Most hotels have a "cot" which is the equivalent of the US portable crib for no charge. You sometimes have to ask for a room big enough to accomodate the "cot".
