Since this forum is dealing specifically with GLBT issues and air travel, I wanted to take the opportunity to give some kudos to Northwest for the customer service they provided me this past January. I know it's a little late in coming, but a lot of times you never hear of the good things airlines do.
This past January, my partner of 14 years was visiting me in Florida when he passed away from a heart attack. Both he and I always flew Northwest and we were scheduled to have a relaxing week together. Well, needless to say, I was a wreck and all of the travel plans had to be rearranged. Fortunately, my brother was there for me and he agreed to fly with me back to Michigan. When we got to the Orlando airport, I expected all kinds of hassles on changing flights, change fees, purchasing a last minute ticket, etc. Much to my surprise and relief, the ticket agent who waited on me was very professional and understanding. After hearing my situation, she took care of everything with no hassles at all. She rebooked my flight, waived the change fee, and even upgraded both my brother and I to first class. As we were walking away, she expressed her condolences and wished us a safe flight.
It was a good feeling to know that this agent didn't care if I was in a gay relationship or not, only that I had lost someone. She treated me with the respect that everyone deserves and not in the judgemental manner that we too often run into. Needless to say, Northwest and all of the airlines need to hire more people with her kind of attitude.
