There was some stuff in the press over here a while back about a gay couple getting a bad reaction on Emirates.

Anyone have any experiences of airlines where it not good to be gay?

Do you get the choice of the business class stoning or the economy class stoning on Iranair?

Saudi Arabian, Egyptair, Kenyan Airways, Gulf Air, Kuwait Airways, I would avoid these for one simple reason.. at least one part of your journey is to or from a location where homosexuality is illegal !

My own (very real) experience tells me that United Airlines is less than welcoming of T* folks in spite of what they would have you believe. Remember, this is the airline which was locked in a long running legal dispute against the City of San Francisco over their partner benefits legislation.

When it comes to the crunch they are still as homphobic and transphobic at their HQ as the worst!

That is why I have a lawsuit in progress against them. I am not the only person to have experienced intolerance at their hands.

From what I remember, United and other companies challenged the San Francisco requirement NOT because they were homophobic but because they did not believe a local government should be able to dictate what benefits they offer to their employees.

I can personally say that I have found United to be NON-homophobic and very understanding. Of course, that is only one person's experience.

How does one term to be 'gay' on board? Does that mean that the two are smooching and practically making out for all the world to see. Attitudes of " we don't care because the world should accept the way we are" is just plain stupid. Do what you want in the privacy of your own home but not in public. You have to remember that airlines don't necessary operate in an 'open' environment.

Personally PDA (Public display of affection) in any form by gay or straight couples is just totally uneccesary. What ever happened to descretion.

Some airlines are good at it - but what about fellow passengers. They may not be as tolerant or understanding as the airline.

A web search on Google for "Sarah West" and "United Airlines" (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22Sarah+West%22+%22United+Airlines%22) will provide plenty of information.

The London Evening Standard (picture) (http://trans.sister.org/images/standard.jpg) also has a report on their website (http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/dynamic/news/top_story.html?in_review_id=454475&in_review_text_id=405277)

What did you think the T in GLBT meant?

oops - should have said I know of two other cases of passengers who encountered similar difficulties on United Airlines flights. One is a male to female transsexual who I have met in person but whose job would be put at risk if she was "outed" by a court case in the way I was.

The other concerns a female to male transsexual which happened after my problems in Omaha. I do not have the full details of this but my information for this came from a source within United Airlines.

The Emirates situation that was reported in the press over here a few years back was of a male couple on a night flight. They were both asleep and one had their arm around the other. Nothing overly sexual, nothing that we haven't seen straight couples do a million times. Apparently they were woken up and toild to stop.

Not nice!

Even the simple things, like allowing you and your s/o join the AC, RCC or whatever club using the spouse rates. Being able to transfer award tickets without a hassle. Not being asked if our husbands are meeting us at the airport.
