I'm planning a family trip to Washington in the next few months and I'm looking for a good place to stay (full service hotel) that is near a metro stop. Flying into BWI on WN.
Thanks!

Any chain preference?

Two years ago we stayed at the Embassy Suites on the NW edge of DC. The hotel sits right on top of the Metro. Access to the Metro is through the shopping area inside the same building as the hotel.

Personally, for each of the major chains, I like the Park Hyatt, St Regis and/or Westin Grand/Fairfax, JW Marriott & Capitol Hilton - probably in that order. While I like to walk, a metro is rarely too far away!

Hope this helps! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif

I can tell you if you are coming with your family and you want a hotel that is near a metro station, one of your best bets may be the Grand Hyatt, which is directly above the Metro Center station, which is a transfer line for the red-line which is what Union Station is on. The Grand Hyatt is where the National Spelling Bee is held (my company worked on it) so I can tell you they have no problems with kids... and it is a beautiful hotel which wass recently remodeled.
If you are interested in luxury, the new Ritz-Carlton has opened up on 22nd and M which is about 3 blocks from the Foggy Bottom Metro and near Georgetown... also walking distance to the monuments (Lincoln is right down the road about a 15 minute walk). Also, the Swissotel Watergate is a very nice hotel which has very good deals and excellent service (hardly ever mentioned). It is right around the corner from the Kennedy Center as well as a close walk to the monuments.
If you are looking for less expensive, there is actually the St. James suites right behind the Foggy Bottom metro which has very nice all suite rooms which are great for families.
There are so many options in DC. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.

The Arlington Hilton Towers is located at the Ballston Metro. It's not a hotel I'd recommend for any other reason other than the location, though. In 3 stays there in April-May, I found this to be a weak Hilton property with less-than-knowledgable staff and subpar amenities. If you like to chainsmoke Camels, ask for room 707. Smells like an ashtray.

(Hey, I needed something in Ballston, I hoard HHonors points, and it was $99/night. What can I say?)

However, I figured I'd mention it as an option because it *is* right on the Orange Line - 5 stops from downtown Washington DC.

If I ever have to stay in this place again, I am going to *specifically request* the stankest smoking room in the hotel, preferably with the smallest bed possible. That's the best way to ensure a nonsmoking king, like my HHonors profile says.

If you are also looking for a decent price, I just got the Grand Hyatt from 9/14/01-9/19/01 for $90.00/night from Priceline. The location looks great. We were at the Washington Hilton & Towers last time for over twice as much.

The St. James was just sold and will soon become a dorm for GW Univ. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/frown.gif

Welcome to the world of George Washington University. This has been my life for the past 4 years... they have also bought up a huge amount of my apartment complex as well. Not to mention the controversial purchase of the famed Howard Johnson across from the Watergate, which is now a freshman dorm.

I definitely recommend the Grand Hyatt, especially over the Hilton Towers. The Grand Hyatt has a much more centralized location and is directly above the Metro Station. The Hilton is a few blocks from the Dupont Metro stop.

Let me throw in one more vote for the Grand Hyatt. I happen to work just across the street, so I am there pretty often for lunch or meetings. I can tell you that the staff is very friendly and quite knowledgeable about the area. Have a great trip. Way to go MartinELK! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/thumbsup.gif

Hi,

We're coming in on this topic a bit late for our info to be useful to you - however the information in our Washington, D.C. travelogue might be helpful to others.

We stayed at the Residence Inn Dupont Circle, which was great for us and would be perfect for family travel as well. Here's where you'll find our travelogue with all the details of our visit:
