Drivers should be allowed to travel 65 mph on more New Jersey roads, says a report issued Friday by the state Department of Transportation.
The report recommends increasing the speed limit on 124 miles of highway, including segments of Routes 80, 280, and 287 in North Jersey.
The DOT conducted a three-year study on 475 miles of highway where the speed limit was increased to 65 mph. The study used speed, accidents, fatalities, and the environment as factors in deciding whether to expand the higher limit to more roads.
"Safety has been the primary focus of our efforts to evaluate this program," acting Gov. Donald T. DiFrancesco said Friday. "The findings indicate that travel was not adversely affected because of the increase in speed."
DiFrancesco said he probably will support the study, but wants to review the report in greater detail before endorsing the change.
