I am planning on being in New York for a conference being held at the Jacob K. Javits Center and having never been to New York City before I was wondering if anyone can recommend fairly inexpensive accomodation. Also any general tips in how to get from JFK to the hotel and what to do sightseeing wise (I will have most of August 31 as I fly out to London in the evening).
Thanks for the help.

I think I would re-post this request under New York City as more of the right people will see it and respond there. Mid-Atlantic is more for the rest of New York State. That said, as far as I know there are no hotels in the same general area as Javits, most conventions run shuttle busses from the main Convention Hotels in Midtown...The NY Hilton, Sheraton, Marriott Marquis, etc. to Javits and return.
Transportation from JFK to Manhattan can range from about $2US(subway train) to about $15-20US (airport shuttle bus) or aprox $40+tip(taxi).

Well, that's not exactly correct. New Yorker Hotel (http://www.newyorkerhotel.com/), remodeled last year, is located 3 blocks from the Javits Convention Center.

Thanks, Eugene. This hotel looks really well situated. I have booked my stay.
Thanks again.
