Does Anyone Have Vacation Expertise on Seattle? Would it be suitable for a long family weekend during the summer months?

I'm a somewhat-frequent visitor there. Yes, it would be very suitable for a weekend family vacation. Try www.nwsource.com (http://www.nwsource.com) for information.
I live in Seattle and the answer is yes. Summer is the best time to come and there are plenty of things to do in town and within driving distance of the city.

I too live here in SEA. A long weekend during the summer (July and August) would be perfect. It will give you a chance to "do the city" as well as get out and about and see some other wonderful things that the Pac NW is known for e.g., Olympic National Rainforest, Bainbridge Island, Snoqaulmie Falls, Mt. St. Helens or Mt. Rainier depending upon your interest.
Also, depending upon where you're from, you will love the best seafood in the country! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif Seattle is beautiful all year round; but the sunny days really make it lovely. Like Missy mentioned, if you have any other ?s, please feel free to email me directly.

Vacation suggestion from a former Seattle resident:
Catch an evening ferry from the Coleman dock to Bremerton and back. Take a picnic dinner to eat on the upper deck. Absolutely stunning views for low $$$.
Enjoy yourself!

I will be in Seattle this weekend, my first time, does anyone have any tips for things to do? I want to try the ferry and the space needle, of course, but looking for nature ideas. Does anyone have recommendations for forests/mountain/great scenic drives/bike rides that I might take? Thaks so much.

Just to the northwest of downtown (Magnolia area) is Discovery Park. Lots of trails and great views.
Further north is Carkeek Park and it's a beach area located along Puget Sound.
You're a little late in the year for mountain hikes; Rainier National Park is stunning. Also, bike riding around the Friday Harbor area in summer is fantastic.

Thanks, ejubler! I am looking forward to the trip and will definitely have to go back to try Mt Rainier after this first too-short trip.
Actually, mountain hiking is fine right now. You could do some short day hikes around Tiger Mountain and Snoqualmie. You could also go out to the Olympic National Forest and hike a bit. You may also want to stop in the Barnes&Noble when you get here and "read" the book Short Hikes in Seattle. It's usually on one of the tables about Seattle and the Northwest. Just make sure you bring your gore-tex. It's November. That means, the rainy season has started. Enjoy your trip!
