I'm trying to figure out where to stay for four days in Paris in mid-January.

I started my search on the Paris Tourist Board site looking a 4 star properties in the 5th and came across this hotel.

It looks good, but would love to hear some first hand stories if there are any out there!

Thanks in advance for any info. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif

As it happens I was just there for the first time two weeks ago. Overall, I would stay there again but it would not be one of my favorites.

Plusses:

--Very helpful, accomodating, and friendly staff
--Easy walking distance from RER St.Michel station, reached without transfer from CDG (but get very precise instructions)
--Notre Dame location is marvelous

Minuses:

--Room was small and got too hot, even with the heat turned off, also no views, but room was quite nicely appointed. Family rooms might be better than my single room was.

What others have said about this hotel:

Nice location, clean room, but tiny lift. Don't try to exchange FF travelers cheques here, though, for the hotel charges a 5% premium. Easier to go to AmEx office near the Opera. Convenient on the left bank, near many sights and activities, and transportation is NOT a problem. Would we stay here again - maybe, but found others just as nice with larger rooms. There is a safe in the room which is very convenient.

We loved this hotel, although the rooms are small. The last time we stayed there, however, we had about $100 stolen from the safe! We don't know how they got into the locked safe, but they did. The desk help is wonderful, though. They speak English, and are very friendly, and aren't at all condescending to those of us who can only say, "Where's the bathroom?" and "How much?" and "Thank you" in French.

Thanks for the replies.

The hotel is currently offering an online special of 120 euros for a standard double. Compared to the rack rates for this hotel, I thought that was a great deal and I love the location. I emailed the hotel 2 days ago asking for rates for their larger rooms and suite but haven't heard back. (I had figured that the standard room would be the size of a closet and was hoping there would also be "good" rates for the larger rooms).

I'll post again if I hear there is a good deal to be had on the larger rooms.

Strikes me as a very good deal at 120 Euros/night. Hard to imagine how to even FIT two people and baggage into a "standard double" however, which I think was what the room I had was.

Weird about the money disappearing from the in-room safe, and somewhat worrisome, since that would imply management was involved. I don't think room cleaners can access that.
I used the safe and had no problems (including leaving money in there, but not visibly).

RichardinSF I have a question - how would you rate the bathroom? Hate to admit it, but the quality of the bathrooms mean alot to me!

So, in the "double standard" that you had, how large (or small) was the bathroom? (I was once in one Paris hotel - the Britannique - whose bathroom was so insanely small that I checked out after one night!). Was there any counter space for cosmetics and the like? Was there a shower or one of those handheld things?

And yes, the rate is low. And for anyone interested, the 2 other Sol Melia Boutique properties are also offering that rate - I think one is the 9th and one is in the 6th, but I'm not sure. Check out their website if interested.

Thanks for the help, Sharon http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif

Sharon,

The bathroom was quite clean and nice marble floors. Lots of random hotel amenities.

But TINY TINY! No real shelf space. Weirdly shaped. There was a bathtub with one of those handheld things, but it had a shower mount and worked well. But -- and this was most strange -- one wall where the sink was came out and walled off half the bathtub from the rest of the bathroom.

The did provide bathrobes btw.

As Mark Twain once said about a hotel room: "There was not enough room to swing a cat in, not without doing damage to the cat." Well, if you were in the bathroom, I'm not even sure you could FIT a cat in addition.

I ended up staying at this hotel last weekend and I would go back. I had a lengthy email correspondence with the hotel and was informed that their largest standard rooms are 19, 29, 39 and 49. She said that they measured 35 sqm with a 4 sqm bathroom. (I didn't bring a tape measurer - but I was pleased with the size.) I found the decor lovely. There were 2 twin beds pushed together with a smoked mirror over the bed, desk, chair, side chair and stocked mini bar under the TV. Nice little touches like potpourri and Louis XIV period etchings. I'd estimate that there was about 3 to 4 feet walking room between the bed and the walls. The toilet was in it's own small room - all marbled and the bathroom was a good size. Rust colored marble on the floors and walls with a pretty mosaic tile display on the floor. The counter was black marble and I'd estimate about 3 ft counter space not including the sink. There was also a black marble half shelf above this counter - so I had plenty of room for my stuff. There was also a make up mirror (as well as the bathrobe). The tub was deep and normal sized in length and width and had the shower that could also be used as a hand held. As it was COLD outside I found the room's warmth a plus.

But the best thing about this room was that if you opened the windows, looked outside and turned your head to the right - there was Notre Dame.

I found the front desk staff nice and helpful and the lounge/bar area and the breakfast area was very pretty. I only ate there one morning. The pastries were lovely but the scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage were pretty bad.

Considering I got this room at €120 I was extremely pleased with it and would definitely go back.

You know, I looked for a thread like this last month and couldn't find it.

I really like this hotel and the little touches such as the pillow menu were nice. The bathroom was very nice, recently updated and with nicely packaged soaps, shampoo, qtips and all that stuff that you always forget to buy. My only complaint was the toilet seat was quite uncomfortable.

The toilet is separate from the bath which is nice with two people.

one more note on the room was that it had 2 2-line phones (on the desk and by the bed) and a one line phone in the bathroom. there were also a bunch of modem connection sprockets conveniently placed above the level of the desk (i don't have a laptop so i couldn't tell you about the speed or whatever it is you measure this stuff by) but thought these features worth sharing for the business travellers.
