Recently I was looking (again) for
Poilane at Rue du Cherche Midi.
I was driving twice through this
narrow one-way-street, and could
not find it. The cars behind
rushed me, and no parking place.
My French is lousy, so
I could not understand a lady. It
looked like she pointed to a street
nearby.
Has Poilane moved?

Interestingly, I found that they
now have a shop in London.

Great… Poilâne has an establishment on the other side of the Channel !

On June 2000, we opened our new bakery in London.
The Poilâne round loaves, currant raisin breads and walnut loaves, Punitions, apple tarts, and other specialities, have taken up their quarters in the heart of the smart district of Belgravia, at 46 Elizabeth Street. You can now brunch during the weekend in the midst of olden-day aromas of bread baked in a wood-fired oven, built as an exact replica of the one in rue du Cherche-Midi in Paris.

This is quite an achievement for Lionel Poilâne, as the use of this type of oven has been prohibited since the Great Fire of London in 1666. All the ingredients come from France: flour, butter, walnuts from the Périgord region, etc., right down to our bakers and sales staff! All Poilâne round loaf fans will be delighted, and it is always a pleasure for our London team to welcome those who are just curious, and all those who enjoy "art de vivre". Welcome to you all.

USAFAN: It's still there - I go all the time. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/wink.gif

It's at number 8, in the first block of the street (up from the Carrefour de la Croix Rouge) on the right hand side.

There is another location in the 15th arrondissement at 49 Boulevard de Grenelle (between the rue Desaix and the rue Daniel Stern - metro Dupleix). Parking (or rather double parking) is a bit easier at this location.

If you are in the San Diego area, there is a small French import store in the Harvest Ranch shopping center (near UTC and Renaissance) that is fed exing polaine loaves for sale at their shop and at the La Jolla farmer's market. They said they could also get those delightful little butter cookies with a bit of notice. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif

Dean and Deluca in DC also had Polaine quarter loaves for sale last I looked.

I'm excited to hear of their London debut though...
