Laundry for the tourist is often a problem in cities like HK where, when you stay at hotels like the Conrad, you pay more for laundry then the garment cost.
Where are cheap, reasonable quality laundry places in Central, Admiralty, or TST?
Thanks.

When I stayed at Hyatt Kowloon last time, we found two dry cleaner shops nearby - one street behind the Hyatt. They usually charged by lb (avg. HK$10/lb for laundry wash & fold). Don't have address but if you walk around the streets after 8am, you will see the laundry signs out after they open.

MTR stations in HK usually have full service laundry outlets.
There's one in the Admiralty MTR station near the Pacific Place exit. Alternatively, the "Valet Shop" in the LG level of the JW Marriott offers laundry service (reasonably priced).

In TST, there's a laundry service in the Chung King Mansion on Nathan Road between the Holiday Inn Golden Mile and the Sheraton HK. It's on the ground floor way in the very rear on the right side (if entering Chung King Mansion from Nathan Rd). Forgot the name, but very reasonable. Two Chinese ladies run it. You can get your laundry back the same day on regular service. Pay in advance when you drop off and get 10% off.

Ok, just to close the loop on this. The laundry in Chungking Mansions arcade, is Purity Laundry, shop 25, ground floor, tel 2366 8888. Laundry can be done by weight, wash and fold, in 3 hours. Recommended, if for no other reason than to get a flavour of the Chungking Mansions "experience".
The valet shop next to the JW Marriott fitness center, 2810 8366, charges by the piece. HK$24 for a t-shirt, less 20% discount currently. (Conrad charges HK$60 for a t-shirt before taxes, etc.)
There's a similar valet shop in the basement of the Holiday Inn Golden Mile in TST, but you might as well go to Purity Laundry.

I don't know the exact adresses but the last time I was looking for a place to do my laundry (not just dry cleaning) was in mid-levels: I found them all over the place, usually in side streets (I remember one just around the corner from the Bruce Lee cafe on Robinson Road).
Usually they charge you by weight and take care of everything: you just drop it off and collect it the next day. Inexpensive, especially compared to having it done at hotels.

There are at least three within 100 metres of what was the Bruce Lee cafe (as is my apartment). But the Bruce Lee Cafe is no more. It is now a local-style cafe/restaurant - which is not a bad thing - there aren't many other places in the Mid-Levels where you can get a three course meal for less than HK$50!

Where was the Bruce Lee cafe? I live on Robinson Road, and there are certainly many laundry places around. Also, great pizza at Pizzeria Italia in Mosque Street.

The Bruce Lee cafe was right next door to where the Pizzeria Italia is (it is indeed excellent, though not cheap). It is now that Chinese place with the yellow sign (sorry - I'm in SIN rght now so I can't look out and see the exact name).

Let me guess: the building you live is probably either Lilly Court or the Grand Panorama.
When I first moved to HK I lived in a furnished apartment in Lilly Court (until I found a semi permanent apartment for the duration of my expat contract). I've left HK a couple of years ago, but am thinking very seriously about getting back there in the not too far future.
Anyway: this thread brought back some good memories http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif

It's not bad now - I've just moved within Grand Panorama from a top floor with roof and stunning harbour view (1250 sq.ft) to one with exactly the same layout about half way up and still with not a bad view for half the price. ($42K -> $20.5K incl.). That is a pretty good deal I reckon in a nice development.
Are you a regular in Phuket's and Rico's too? http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif
Maybe we should take this to email if you wish - it's in my profile.

To bring this back to the subject of laundry...
a definite recommendation for the Purity Laundry in Chungking Mansions, for all the reasons previously listed (price, Chungking Mansions experience, and friendliness of the ladies who run the place).
I'm in HK now, and needed 4-5 days' worth of underwear, socks, and T-shirts laundered. It would have cost about HK$800 at the InterContinental where I'm staying, but Purity did a fine job for HK$30. Dropped off at 9am, done by noon.
(Much more about the IC and HK, including happy surprises and profound disappointments, when I get back after Christmas. Though I will admit that it's a singular joy to be looking out on the harbor, drink in hand, while enjoying FlyerTalk on the hotel-supplied laptop.)

Cheap, local laundries in Central abound in the area toward Sheung Wan, all over the narrow streets around the Central Police Station, Soho, Central Escalator.
In Admiralty/Pacific Place, there's 1 or 2 next to the construction site of the new Pacific Place center by Star Crest apartment building, near Star Street and the side streets around there.

To revive an old thread, on a topic often taken for granted:
I have heard that normal washing in HK will turn your clothes purple. Now I am not sure on this, it may be my MIL again, but I am fairly certain that everyone is not walking around in purple clothes. Is there any truth to this, and is it still advisable to utilize one of the local wash&fold services?
BTW: I have learned not to take this for granted due to a recent experience in Titusville, FL. ;)
Thanks much.

The Peninsula and Oriental Mandardin do laundry beautifully. It arrives practically gift wrapped. :)

Good and inexpensive laundry chain: http://www.cleanliving.com.hk
And they never turn anything purple. :)

For those in Pacific Place (Conrad, Shangri-la, Marriott) or in the Ritz Carlton or Mandarin, there is a laundry outlet in the Queensway shopping mall (main corridor) which looked pretty resonable. Haven't tried it myself.

I believe that the "laundry" in Queensway Plaza is a Clean Living outlet (referenced earlier in the thread). Clean Living will launder shirts and t-shirts, but not underwear or socks.

Aiyaa! No cleaning of crusty knickers? Then what's the point? I can always reuse shirts and t-shirts, especially if it hasn't been too humid outside.

Foreign devils who serve each other poison milkshakes can go buy a new pair of too-tights every day.

But an appeal has been filed. I knew the ill-fated couple somewhat, and you would have never guessed anything was even remotely ferkakte with them. It was a season of schadenfreude.

They should be still running, but they are unfriendly and expensive. Before I had my own washing machine, i used to go to laundry shops on Kimberley Road and another one in a small alley connecting Kimberley Street with Cameron Rd.
If you need details I can post a map. If you live in Chungking though you might want to go for the closer one downstairs.

Well that all depends on your budget. And there are reasonable guest houses between all the mess. I used to live there 16 years ago when I first set foot into Hong Kong in a clean place (I was introduced to the place by backpackers in Nepal) run by Shanghai people. We are still friends and I sometimes go to visit them. Furthermore Chungking has one of the best Indian restaurants in town. And all that crap that it is not safe is defintely not true. It looks scary on the first view and it is dirty in public areas. But that is all.

I never said it wasn't safe. Its just an irredeemable dump. Good Indian food, but pretty good also available at the Branto in Lock Road and the Woodlands on Mody Road.

I'd be interested in more information about alternatives, including some idea of cost and turn around time compared to Purity. (I never found Purity unfriendly, but I didn't have all that much interaction on a per transaction basis.) Another nice thing about the Chungking Mansions laundry was its proximity to the MTR.
Also, how about a cheap, reliable place around Admiralty that does everything. I don't believe this thread resolved that world shaking topic. The thought is to leave the Conrad/Marriott/Shangri La and drop the dumb laundry off without a detour to mid levels or TST.
Realistically, though, if a full service laundry isn't in United Centre or Queensway Plaza, you might as well take the MTR to TST and go to Purity and go up in the A block lift to snag some masala dosa.

I used the one in the Admiralty station before while I was staying at the Marriott. Quite good and fast. You can find them at many of the MTR stations.

Just to update the thread on Purity Laundry in the ever fascinating Chungking Mansions (see posts 4 and 5). Yes, it's still there. Shop 25, kinda in the back on the right.
Chungking Mansions seems to be getting pretty tame these days, though you don't see a lot of tourist couples in matching jumpsuits yet.

In other laundry news, I scouted a couple of places while strolling around the Jordan area. One was:
Surpass Dry Cleaning (and laundry)
29B Ning Po Street, close to Nathan Rd
Mon-Sat 8-9; Sun/Holiday 9-8 (so, better hours than Purity laundry)
1-7 pounds HK$25; HK$3/each additional pound (so, cheaper than Purity)
2-3 hours
