My wife and I will be in HK and would like a few recommendations for hotels. Now if I wanted to spend $300 a night, the field's wide open.
But we don't. How about $80 a night? *ouch*
We basically look at a hotel room as a place to sleep. So the main thing is that it's clean, safe, and fairly close to mass transit.

Try the Salisbury Street Y, in TST. I am not kidding. It is clean, safe, and very well located, a minute from the TST MTR and another minute from the Star Ferry to Central and Wan Chai. If you are willing to step up a bit, you might find the Kowloon Hotel and the Holiday Inn Golden Mile to be going for $100 or so. Both are fine properties, good deals for $100. Location is also great, in TST.

Thanks for your recommendations. It's the high season so on Orbitz, the YMCA was $114, Kowloon Hotel was $162 and the Holiday Inn Golden Milie was 158.
Is anyone familiar with the Eaton Hotel and its location?

I've never stayed at the Eaton, but I would not recommend its location, in Mongkok. Especially if it's your first time in HK, you would do much better to stay either in Tsim Sha Tsui (TST), or on HK Island in Central, Admirality, or Causeway Bay.
I'd agree with the YMCA recommendation (but beware, there are several YMCA hotels in HK - you'd want the one on Salisbury Rd). I'm not always a fan of Priceline, but you might wantr to consider it: the Asia Priceline site has come up with some good prices, although many of the Kowloon hotels are in TST East, which is a good 10-minute walk (or more) from the subway.
Orbitz is not always a great source for HK hotels. www.asia-hotels.com (http://www.asia-hotels.com) often has good rates for HK, and if you're flying on Cathay Pacific, Cathay Pacific Holidays (http://www.cathaypacific.com/chl) also offers good hotel deals in HK.

The Eaton is not a bad place, a bit north of TST. Not a bad location, but not as good as the other places mentioned. Also, the rates there should be actually higher than the Y, the Kowloon, or the HI (unless you have a special deal).
Another alternative is to take advantage of some good airfare/hotel combos running right now, with 3-4 nights hotel plus airfare starting at about $1,200 USD. Check out the CX FT discussion.
Also, Orbitz (or Travelocity) are definitely NOT the places to find good deals in HK. Try a local HK travel agent, such as anytours.com.hk or Westminster Travel at www.hkwtl.com (http://www.hkwtl.com) . Don't be put off by their crappy websites. They are legit places, and I have used both of them multiple times to my complete satisfaction.

Thanks for the input. The reason I mentioned the Eaton was that it was rated highly in Fodor's or maybe it was Frommer's.
It was listed at HK$400 a night in Orbitz so I booked it for now.
I will check out those other websites that have been mentioned.
Thanks again!

A good option is the Royal Windsor Hotel, on Kimberley Road, just off of Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon, the "busy part" of town. Stores, restaurants, supermarket (Wellcome), pharmacies, MTR (subway) stops, they're all immediately about.
Price range is about what you're looking for, too.

Try this site. They have always been good to me. I believe they also have a rebate offer, so take that into consideration as to the final price. Make sure HK is listed for the rebate offer.

I have found that if one takes the trouble to call the hotel directly (via Voice, no emails ) and talk to the international relations manager or reservations manager, great unpublished deals can be had. I've paid 1/2 the published rates @ marriott, IC, Hyatt..... overseas and earned points too -- Unlike priceline .......

I got the Renaissance Kowloon for $25 via Priceline about a month ago for an August stay. One of the best deals I have got.
JW Marriott has been going for about $75 most of the time.
