Dozens of tourists and bicyclists braved the Golden Gate's infamous microclimate yesterday, to stroll or bike across the bridge after the walkways were opened for the first time since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Officials say security measures will remain tight. For the time being, that means the sidewalks have temporarily limited hours.

BRIDGE HOURS
Temporary hours for bridge sidewalks
-- The east sidewalk and south parking lot will be open only during daylight hours -- from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The west sidewalk will be open only to bicyclists, and then only on weekends during those same hours.

Announced today during a press conference:

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Governor Gray Davis is warning that terrorists may be targeting four California bridges for an attack in the next week.
Law enforcement officials have "credible evidence" that terrorists are plotting a rush-hour attack on the bridges.
They are the Golden Gate Bridge or Bay Bridge, both in San Francisco, the Vincent Thomas Bridge at the Port of Los Angeles, or the Coronado Bridge in San Diego.

Davis says the attacks were planned between tomorrow and November ninth.

Security around the bridges has been heightened and involves personnel ranging from the U-S Coast Guard to the California Highway Patrol.

Davis says the best preparation is to let terrorists know that we know what they're up to, and we're ready.
