Oct. 11 (AP) — In the past month, airline ticket sales have plunged to levels not seen in America since 1998.

But all Californians aren't staying at home. Many are taking to the woods instead of the skies in search of quiet getaways.

Officials from Joshua Tree National Park to Yosemite to Lake Tahoe say parks and lodges are full. They're also saying there's steady traffic that's normal for this time of year.

Air traffic this year is expected to fall to levels equal to three years ago. Aviation industry consultant Michael Boyd predicts that 230 million fewer passengers will fly in the next five years than had been expected.

That may mean bigger crowds at parks and popular driving destinations such as Napa Valley and Hearst Castle.
