People are still mowing lawns, and moose are still eating them. Some folks are out in tank tops and shorts. What kind of November is this? An upside-down, record-setting month, according to the National Weather Service.

So far, this has been the warmest November in Anchorage since 1917, the first year of local weather records. The daily average temperature this month has been 34.2 degrees, or 13 degrees above normal, the agency said.

Tuesday brought a high of 55, topping the day's record of 53 degrees set in 1936.

After weeks of rain and unusually warm weather, Anchorage finally got its first real snowfall overnight Tuesday. Across the city, trees were caked with snow, intersections were jammed, and the whole thing was met with mixed reactions.

2/8/03, when ANC temps are warmer than many locations in the Sunbelt:

Recent melt and drizzle have killed or postponed a slew of winter events, or unnerved organizers still holding on. Skate rinks were puddled, ski and dog trails scoured and slushed.

This is definitely one weird winter. Anchorage's coldest recorded February temperature was 38 below zero in 1947. This year, the thermometer shot up to 45 degrees on Feb. 6.
