Juneau -- Gov. Frank Murkowski ordered state transportation officials to again examine building a road from here to Skagway, making good on a campaign pledge to jump-start the stalled project.

That route is about a 40 minute flight on a little plane (can't remember the type but it's about a 5-7 passenger usually). There have been many times when I've had to take the Alaska Marine Highway (ferry) 7 hour trip from Skagway to Juneau due to weather.
This ferry is only twice a week though so sometimes you have to wait a couple days for it. Not very convenient when you are traveling for business.
However, I travel many places in Alaska where there are no roads. It's just a way of life here. Skagway is not that big so I guess the main traffic would be for tourists.

There is daily ferry service between Juneau and Haines and Skagway from June through September. Winter service is usually 2 times a week by mainline service and one or twice a week by the smaller ships.
Regarding flights to Skagway, Wings, for example, uses cessna caravans and 207's for most flights up there.

Thanks Jerry! I never can remember the planes.
Anyway, I only make it to Skagway in the winter usually as my client is in the tourism industry and can't take the time for work on their computers during the summer. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/frown.gif

I think that not being able to drive to Juneau is one of the best things about it. I (for one) would be very sad to see a road connect it to the outside world.
The place will be overrun by RV's in the summer! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/frown.gif
