View Full Version : Cheap-o Motel in Fairbanks?

I'm planning a brief visit to Fairbanks in two weeks, arriving about 11 PM on a Friday night. I'd like to find a low-price place to stay, but low-price and Alaska seem to be oxymoronic. The cheapest chain motel on Expedia or Travelocity is Motel8, at $99.95 a night [ouch!].

B&B's can be had for less, but I don't want to show up at one at 11 PM (even though it likely will be daylight then).

Priceline doesn't cover Fairbanks. Neither do any (?) of the travel websites with a menu of cities, like Hotwire and Quikbook. The Motel8 website lists a rate $1 cheaper than Expedia's.

Can someone suggest a way to find any better Super8 rate? Or, can you recommend an alternative cheap-o motel in Fairbanks that will accept guests after 11 PM?

Thank you!

Replying to my own question: I never found an inexpensive Super8 rate. The motel itself was comfortable and the parking lot was close to full. The air conditioner worked but the heater did not...at times I needed one or the other.

When I needed a ride to the airport early in the morning, before Super8's shuttle was in operation, the motel paid a cab to take me.

For others who want to visit Fairbanks cheaply, consider the Fairbanks Hotel downtown (517 3d Avenue). It's more a guest-house than a hotel, because there's one shared bathroom per floor. But the rooms are clean and comfortable (there are cheap places in Fairbanks which are neither of these things) and the receptionist was quite friendly. After deciding I was a "nice guy" she charged me $55, tax included, for a stay in early June. Pretty good deal.
