I have a couple of friends that want to go to Alaska for two weeks for their honeymoon. I've already told them that that's the prime time travel season, but I told them I'd look into it.

They want to go July 27th and return August 10th...FLL - ANC. Fares are looking like around $1k for them both and I think they'll only get higher. They want to rent an RV and I told them to do that first...see if one was available before they booked non-refundable plane tickies....

Some questions.....am I right about the fares? Will they just go UP between now and then? What's the chances of renting an RV still for those dates....what's a hotel in ANC gonna cost them for a couple of nights....I think they're planning about $7k for this trip and it looks to me like it's gonna take that much and maybe more...

Also, If they take Delta or American, can I upgrade them w/ my miles?

Any help/info is surely appreciated....

thanks,

We are going to Alaska this spring and this will be our 3rd trip. Two years ago when we went, we rented an RV from Great Alaskan Holidays (www.greatalaskanholidays.com) [907-248-7777]and as far as we are concerned, they are the best rental company to work with. There were no hidden charges. I would recommend contacting them immediately to see what they have for availability.

With regards to flights, I would check rates after May 1st. Many airlines add additional flights which make the rates more competitive. Also, Priceline would be an option to bid on a flight, hotel or rental car if they like to be adventureous. We have used Priceline for flights, rental cars and hotels and have never been burned. We have always been extremely happy with Priceline. (We just came back from a vacation in Florida and stay at a resort in Hollywood, FL at $100 a night by bidding with Priceline). Also, www.hoteldiscounts.com (http://www.hoteldiscounts.com) will give them an idea how much hotels will cost.

With regards to upgrading them with your miles, you should check directly with Delta or American.

For lodging in Alaska, one year we stayed at a different bed & breakfast each night for a week. It was great! Bed & Breakfast are different in Alaska than what you would expect. Some of them are individual families opening up their homes during the busy summer season. Alaska cannot have a lot of hotels with only having business about 5 months out of the year.

I am not sure where they plan to travel, but Denali National Park is a must. It is wonderful. We took the shuttle bus to Eielson (check out www.nps.gov (http://www.nps.gov) and enter Denali National Park for more information on Denali). If they go, go on the first bus when you have a better chance of seeing wildlife.

Also, they need to take a boat out on the water to see the wildlife and glaciers. We have gone on the Windjammers Cruise for a lunch cruise. Also, the Prince William Sound Cruise for a lunch cruise. Both were excellent.

We love Alaska and we hope they have a wonderful honeymoon. Let me know if there are any other questions I might be able to answer.

I've made more than 20 trips to Alaska in all seasons. Some for work. Some for pleasure. You are correct, it is very prime season. Any action they intend to take, they need to do now.

Yes, Denali is nice, however the animals and mountains don't recognize park boundries. You can see plenty without fighting crowds.

As far as B & B's-----Honeymoon? Well, get a copy of a large publication called the MILEPOST. www.milepost.com (http://www.milepost.com)

All the data you will need.

I don't like crowds, so I travel very off season.
