Anchorage voters Tuesday rejected a hotel-motel bed tax increase meant to finance a big new convention center, but the plan's supporters vow to try again.
By roughly 46 percent to 54 percent, voters turned down a plan that had been endorsed by Mayor George Wuerch and a sizable contingent of the business community. The measure -- raising the current 8 percent tax to 12 percent -- would have provided most of the money for a new convention center estimated to cost about $100 million.
