Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport plans to spend about $15 million over the next 10 years to insulate 650 nearby residences against the rumble and roar of aircraft. At a price of $30,000 to $50,000 per house, the airport will hire contractors to put in acoustical windows, replace doors and insulate attics and walls.
The improvements will cost homeowners nothing. A pilot program working on 30 houses will start this fall. Fifty or more homes will be insulated annually after that.
The Federal Aviation Administration will pay 94 percent of the cost, and the state-owned airport will pay the rest from airline fees, said Theresa Maser, airport noise program director.
