In its heyday in the early 1940s, the Independence Mine at Hatcher Pass teemed with workers who dug deep passages underneath Skyscraper and Granite mountains so they could blast, shovel and cart out loads of gold-rich ore.

Officials are hoping visitors might once again explore the pitch-black tunnels. They wouldn't be lured by riches but would ride in electric carts as part of an underground tour of the old mining passages.
