I will be flying into ANC this weekend and wanted to maximize my chance of seeing the northern lights.

Which direction do planes normally takeoff and land from (so I can get a seat on the correct side of the plane)? Feel free to call me insane if this plan simply won't work.

I'd aim for the right side if flying from east to west. Last Feb I was flying from MSP to BZN, and there was a beautiful display. The pilot announced it and everyone who was on the left side took turns slipping into the empty seats or galley to take a look. You might tell the FA you would like to see them, too, to improve your chances.
