Does anyone have recommendations for a full day halibut fishing excursion? I'm open to anyplace in Homer, Juneau, Sitka, or Ketchikan.
I have yearnin to catch me a big fish this summer. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I don't have a specific recommendation for a charter operator, but Homer is probably the best of the cities you mention for Halibut fishing.

missy,
Halibut doesn't really get going around Juneau til mid July or so. Bigger ones are usually caught a little further out like Elfin Cove although I've seen and caught good size halibut right around Juneau. Glacier Bay (Gustavus) is a nice place to halibut fish with great scenery also.
Good fishing,
jerry

The names of any recommended charter companies would be greatly appreciated.

You can email the name if your more comfortable with that..I'd hate to be responsible for the prompt disappearance of a fishing boat due to its FT posting http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

A few years ago, I went out with an outfit on the Homer spit in early June. I caught 2 halibut, 45# and 78#. There are packing houses along the spit so you can send your catch home if you want.
I went out with RnA Halibut charters. I have an old flyer without a web site, but a phone # 907-235-7847.
Good Luck

I spent 5 days at Elfin Cove last month, and am going back for another 5 next month. The good thing about Elfin is that the fishing is close. The problem with Juneau etc. is that to get to the best places, you need to spend half your time traveling to and from. Did you think about Gustavus?

Well, I decided on Homer after many recommendations and used Lucky Pierre Charters. http://www.xyz.net/~pierre

They were GREAT! They nice (full ocean view)rooms for rent right above their office on the spit. Everything you could want is within walking distance (restaurants, grocery, fish processing plant, the boat harbor, and the Salty Dawg bar. And prices are soft in the value season. I got a great deal and came home with 55 lbs of filets http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif
