Hey guys, I'll be travelling to Denmark in a few weeks time. Despite those well known places such as Tivoli, Rundetaarn etc.. Any suggestions of other Places of Interest or sites to visit in Copenhagen or outside the City? And how to get to these places?

It sounds like you have Copenhagen covered.

I would suggest for a day trip that you see Kronborg Castle in Helsingør. Better known as the Hamlet Castle. Catch the train to Helsingør at Copenhagen central station. On the way back to Copenhagen you might want to stop at Humlebæk and take a short walk to the Louisiana art museum.

Another good day trip is Roskilde. A short train ride from Copenhagen central, the cathedral is where the kings and queens are "buried". There's an interesting viking ship museum there too.

I always try to have my friends who have never been to Denmark make sure to try smørrebrød and the red Tuborg beer (which I heard recently they are taking off the market).

Go to Dragor, which is a small town on the coast by the new bridge to Sweden. Great views of the bridge, but more importantly, a beautiful, quaint, photogenic town! You can ride the local bus there from Copenhagen, maybe 30-45 minutes.

If you can venture farther, visit one of the islands on the west coast, such as Fano. It has a history in fishing, and many of the buildings there still have thatched rooves, again very quaint.

I regret not getting up to Skagen on the northern end. It has a reputation as an artists community and is a bit more temperate due to it's location in the ocean/seas.

Oh, and--the trains there are very good, and can easily be used to traverse the country. Consider riding over to Sweden for a day. And--watch your billfold in the Copenhagen bus/train station. Mine was lifted there http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/frown.gif .

I loved everything and everywhere I went in Denmark: Aarhus, Copenhagen (various neighborhoods), Helsingor, and Roskilde.

MUST see:
(Frederiksborg Castle)
http://www.slotte-herregaarde.dk/cms/Default.asp?Page=13

This is by far the best Castle (Slot) in Denmark, and it should be seen in the spring or summer when the garden is in bloom. You can take the local city train there for about 10 dollars.

I personally don't mind Tivoli for kids, but if your older and want to avoid a bunch of drunk Swedish folk :) you can skip it! Bakken is free and offers the same show with a great forest near by.

You also must not just see Nyhavn (as was said before), but sit there with some beer and enjoy it. In the summer many people bring beer here and sit by the water and enjoy the sun! Cheap way to have a good time in Denmark, and also meet people from the city.

The Viking ship musuem in Roskilde, as mentioned above, really is great. This was a center of Viking civilization centuries ago, and some of the original ships were excavated, and are now on display in a museum on the grounds. They also build new Viking ships using the traditional methods. These are on display outdoors where you can watch the work going on. They also offer short sailings on the rebuilt ships. The tours are really informative. Give it a try.
