Hello! The Grace offers a car to/from the airport for R220,00 for the first person and R120,00 for the second person, for a total of R340 each way. Is there a cheaper option that is safe? Thank you!

I've never paid more than R200 to get to Sandton from JNB, you can book any car at the airport or take a taxi for less. But it won't be the BMW from the Grace.

Thank you, number 6! Is it pretty straightforward which taxis are legit and/or where to reserve a car? The last time I was in Africa we flew into Harare and I wouldn't have wanted to figure things out outside the airport.

Alternatively, I suppose we could rent a car for the day. It's 76 Rand for a tiny subcompact or 267 Rand for a Corolla. We fly out again 24 hrs. later.

Don't recommend you rent a car and drive in Johannesburg unless you know what you are getting yourself in for (it requires a certain skill and knowledge which you wouldn't normally have in the US). JNB airport is very heavily policed and completely safe ... a byproduct of this police presence is the lack of the chaos associated with other African airports. You are completely safe in any taxi at JNB. For a bit more money you can book a nicer car, but not really needed. Be sure to allow an airport porter to carry your bags -- they really need the income and often have many family members depending on their earnings. I don't normally recommend that, but the situation in SA is very sad with the disintegration of the economy and you can make a difference in how you behave as a tourist. Crime is a problem -- be aware of that -- but you can still have a very enjoyable stay.

I usually ask the drivers to show me their badge, although they usually wear them around their necks. There are usually drivers in the arrivals area who will approach you -- they are usually just trying to avoid waiting in the taxi line outside, and "jumping the queue". It's all very calm, and it's never pushy.

I haggle a little on the price and I can usually get one for 200 rand to Sandton (as number 6 mentioned), I think Rosebank is slightly farther away than Sandton so it may be a little more, I'm not sure.
