I need some help from the JNB experts on this board.

When starting my RTW in JNB, i will have the LH-layover coming from MUC at 0815a and leaving to FRA at 9.55p.

Any suggestions what I would be able to do during the day? I have never been to JNB nor to South Africa at all, but will stay a couple of days in Cape Town when returning from the RTW. I am wondering if it would be interesting (and safe) to just hail a cab into town because I didn't find anything exciting to visit in the sources I looked.

Another option I tought about was to get on a half day guided sightseeing tour. Does it make sense? Which tour operators are recommendable and what kind of tour should I take?

Thanks for all recommendations.

You could take a tour of the gold mines in Johannesburg.

An alternate choice would be to make a quick one day trip to Victoria Falls. South African Airways flight 40 departs at 0915 arriving Victoria Falls at 1055. The return flight SA45 leaves at 1635 arriving JNB at 1815. Yes it is a very hurried trip but if you don't think you'll ever be in that part of the world again it may be worth the quick trip.

We're passing through JNB also this summer and were told about a wonderful cheetah sanctuary that makes a good day trip. I don't know the name of it but check with Premier Tours in Philadelphia at www.premiertours.com. (http://www.premiertours.com.)

I would scarcely call myself an expert but I did spend a few days in Jo'Burg 2 years ago and had very little time for sightseeing. I did find a hop-off-hop-on tour bus that made several routes of the city, stopping at major points of interest. I personally enjoyed the Zoo (rare white lions) and the Randburg waterfront (shopping and eats!) via this bus. I'll post the contact info if I can find the flyer...

The other thing to do is to hire a tour guide/driver to show you around. Rates are quite reasonable. I used this method to take a tour of Soweto and some other areas of interest. These guides are quite knowledgeable (licensed) and know where good eats and shopping are...Again I'll post contacts if I can find them - check some South African Tourism web sites too.
