The Star quotes health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang as saying that malaria deaths in SA have risen from 14 in 1992 to 423 last year.

Reported cases rose from 2 872 to 61 934 over the same period.

No cases were reported outside KwaZulu-Natal, Mupmalanga and Northern Province last year, nor so far this year.

Perceptions about the incidence of malaria are an important factor in travel planning.

Hi Johan,

(thanks for responding to my previous questions) I have read that no cases of malaria are reported from Botswana until NOv. when the rains begin and for August travel it may not be absolutely necessary to take anti-malarials. My friend who went to SA and V. Falls last July(and stayed in quite a few gameparks) said only the Americans were taking the anti-malarials, not the Europeans or South Africans. She said they saw no mosquitos, not even on the Zambezi. What is your opinion?

My mother just came back from a cruise to SA.
No Malaria tablets needed for Capetown, Durban etc.
However, Malaria tablets should be taken if you visit Kruger National Park (other parks ?).
