I have a RTW ticket that begins in JNB in late June. In the course of determining various ways to get to JNB, I found an economical routing thru Mauritius.

What can you tell me about this country? Is it interesting to visit? Safe for a woman alone? How many days should I spend there? How much does a good hotel cost? Is it predominantly a beach destination, or is there more?

And and all information would be greatfully received.

I visited Mauritius about 5 years ago and really enjoyed it. In my opinion, Mauritius is really under-rated (but maybe I am out of touch with mainstream tastes, because I found Cape Town to be the most grossly over-rated place I have ever visited and almost everybody else seems to love it). I would say that Mauritius is seen as primarily a beach resort, but there are some other interesting sights as well (such as the botanical gardens and the market at Port Louis) and some beautiful vistas. The beaches are not in the same league as the Seychelles, but still can be very nice and the water is a beautiful shade of blue. We rented a car (they drive on the left) and enjoyed seeing the whole island at our own pace. As far as safety goes, I am sure that there are a few dark roads and alleys that you would not walk to walk down at 3 AM, but overall I would describe it as very safe. My impression is that the better hotels are going to be expensive, but we stayed at a little no-name guest house in Pereybere for US$25 per night and found it to be just fine. If you have the chance to go, I would say by all means go and see it for yourself.
