Would appreciate any advice or tips on train travel between Milan and Zurich. Best line, times, prices. When/where to purchase.

Thanks,

Steve

if that's the only rail segment you do in Europe, than just buy an ordinary one-way, second-class ticket after arrival at Milan main-station. No prereservation necessary unless you just travel on a Sunday afternoon when school holidays (august, or XMas-time) in Switzerland end.

Then, instead of sitting in the (comfortable) second-class (first costs 50% more) take a major break at the Wagon-Restaurant (equal access for first- and second class travellers) for lunch or dinner (the price difference between first and second makes up for the dinner price); I recommend to reserve the table at the Restaurant at train-boarding time in Milan (italian: Milano).

Rudi, FlyAAway may and up on a LIST from the Swiss Police.
============================================
Article in Der Spiegel:

Schäuble ist einer von 29
prominenten Unionspolitikern, die durch eine
Rasterfahndung ins Visier der Schweizer Polizei
geraten sind und als potenziell Verdächtige
auf einer Liste aufgeführt wurden. "Es ist ein
empörender Vorgang, wenn man auf solche
Listen kommt, weil man irgendwann mal im
Kanton Genf übernachtet hat", sagte er dem
"Stern".

Translation with Systranlinks:

Schaeuble is from 29 prominent union politicians, who are
guessed/advised by a raster search in the visor of Swiss police and
were specified as potenziell suspicious ones on a list. " it is an
infuriating process, if one comes on such lists, because one stayed
overnight to the " asterisk " sometime times in the canton Geneva ",
said he.

He called an invitation off to a meeting in Switzerland in the
meantime. " if alone the fact that one is in Switzerland, for Swiss
police

the swiss (police and press) didn't so far publish anything like this. And the German Press (and Mr Schaeuble's office) informed only half of 'the truth'. Mr Schaeuble is not searched and is not considered (yet) to have done anything wrong (at this time), but the swiss police wants to question him , regarding the monney transfers (to Switzerland) and bribery possibilities of the CDU in the 90-ies.

I like the way the swiss police inquires without protecting (influencial neighbouring) politicians (and the swiss banking system ...). Don't you?

Rudi:

Yes, I agree with you! It's O.K. to question a German politician regarding black money. Switzerland has to protect their country, banking system etc. - no matter what.
Second, I should have mentioned that I wasn't serious, when I wrote my comment - it was ment somewhat like a joke.
I hope FlyAAway is enjoing his trip through the Italian and Swiss mountains - it looks like a nice trip, he should do it during daylight.
