Since award space was available, I booked what will be my 3d annual December in Chile. By that time, it will probably be my 6th trip there (and the 3d one of length). I will be there at least 2 weeks and wonder what new to see. If you have been to places OTHER than what I mention and recommend it, please say so, and why.

I have been to (north to south)
Iquique, La Serena (y Valle de Elqui), Santiago, Viña/Valpo, Pto Montt (y los lagos - up to Valdivia), Chiloe, y Pta Arenas. I'd go back to each of these places without hesitation. I will probably have a week for "whatever" in addition to the Santiago and Pto Montt stops on this trip. Please keep all suggestions within Chile. Thanks!

A place I very much want to visit is Tierra del Fuego, the very southernmost point at the tip of Chile & Argentina. I've seen pictures of a friend's trip, and it looks marvelous. Paul Theroux also touches on it in his book "The Old Patagonian Express".

I've been as far as Pta. Arenas on the Chile side - I was expecting something no more developed than the north of Alaska and ended up in a nice modern city near the bottom of the world. I also got to visit the cockpit of a 767 over Torres del Paine http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif
