My husband grew up in Massachusetts and is half Portuguese (his grandfather came from the Azores) He still has many cousins who still have have homes in Lisbon or the Azores. We live in Seattle, but visit Ma. many times a year. We typically listen to Portuguese radio stations or TV stations when we are in Ma.. In case people didn't know, tons of Portuguese settled in the NEw Bedford and Taunton area of Ma (probably for whaling). We've never been to Portugual, but I have spent alot of time in Spain. I don't think we'll have that hard a time understanding Portuguese. I also understand a lot of italian and a little french. And if the Brazilians are anything like the Portuguese, they'll be a very waarm people. BTW, my husband is a vegetarian and doesn't eat fish, chicken or meat. Will he be able to find anything to eat in Brazil?

Yes Brazilians are really friendly and warm. Finding pure vegetarian restaurant would be difficult. Most restaurants do have a dish or two which is vegetarian. Most upscale hotels will have elaborate buffet breakfasts where tons of fresh fruit is served.
