I don't know if this is the rigth place to post this, but I saw a billboard in LAX and checked out the Malaysian Airlines website for more info.
First note flights on this airpass do not award mileage. Hence the post in FT Travel, not FT Miles.
Look at http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/access_asia.html and you can see that for $747, you can travel from LAX via TPE, or from EWR via Dubai (an extra good deal) into Kuala Lampur, then plan trips from there to the following destinations: Bali (Denpasar) • Bandar Seri Begawan • Bangkok • Canton (Guangzhou) • Cebu • Hanoi • Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) • Hong Kong • Jakarta • Kaohsiung • Kota Kinabalu • Kuala Lumpur • Kuantan • Kuching • Langkawi • Manila • Medan • Penang • Phnom Penh • Phuket • Singapore • Surabaya • Yangon(Rangoon)
This is similar to the Cathay Pacific deal with a couple differences: 1. the price is quite a bit lower! 2. You can add such cities as Johannesburg or Buenos Aires for extra; and 3. Malaysian serves more cities in Southeast Asia with the pass than Cathay's program: 17 cities with Cathay vs. Malaysian's 23 Asian cities, plus Dubai if you leave from EWR-- IMHO, a free stop in Dubai is what makes the Malaysian deal seem better than Cathay.
The Malaysian pass gives you 30 days to travel, compared to 21 with Cathay. With both passes, you can extend the validity to up to 90 days for an additional $300.
To Cathay's credit, their Australia add ons are $200 cheaper than Malaysian's. For what it's worth.
Another difference: Malaysian charges a $150 summer surcharge, while Cathay charges $300 extra.
Just a heads up. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif
