Has anyone travelled from Rio to the Falls. Is it possible to do this as a day trip? If not, is overnight accomodation plentiful ( and cheap?)

Iguacu Falls can be a day trip, there are morning flights out of Rio with afternoon returns. You can also purchase packages in Rio with 1 or 2 nights hotel that are about the same price as air alone. Its been a long time but I think there is an airport limo that goes from the airport to the falls in about 45 minutes. Any travel agent in Rio can help with plans and info.

thanks for the information. I had wondered if it was too far.

Considering the weather around the falls, a day trip may not work. Plus, I would want to spend at least one and probably two nights to really see the place, including both sides of the falls. It is well worth it. The Sheraton is fine on the ARG side. I got a good rate on the Sheraton website with a better (view) room at the same rate as the discount sites.

Thanks - have just looked at the Sheraton but unfortunately it is fully booked during the week we are in Brazil. As I only have a week I think I will just leave the Falls for another time.

It is well worth seeing, but you really need a day and a half to two days to really see it well. You really don't want to be like the tourist who drives up to the edge of the Grand Canyon, snaps a picture and leaves.

When we flew in, the pilot did a 360 over the falls in a pretty good sized plane. I was, of course, on the wrong side of the plane to see anything.

I would think there will be plenty to do in Rio for a week. Have a great time!

So did you ever go to Iguazu?

If you are still planning the trip let me know, I could offer some suggestions.

Stay just over the border in Argentina. Visit for atleast 2 days, 3 better.

We did part of our honeymoon there back in 1983. Iguazu is fantastic! We stayed on the Argentine side. In the area we also visited the Brazilian side, the Parana dam, Puerto Stroessner in Paraguay [different name now], some old Jesuit church ruins [did you see the DeNiro movie The Mission?] and some other things.

We also spent time in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and Punta del Este. Punta del Este is definitely worth the visit.

Have a great visit!

The dam is called ITAIPU ... and worth a visit.
The city is now called Ciudad del Este ... was told not worth a visit.

Ciudad del Este is certainly missable.

As for the falls, if one must do them in one day, I recommend the Argentinian side... The only thing the Brazilian side can offer that Argentina canīt match is a panoramic view (although taking a boat ride does get you a fairly panoramic view).

Just got back to BUE from the falls, so if anyone has any questions, please ask.
