Given that there's not a single post about Guatemala in this forum, I'm not too optimistic, but....does anyone have a hotel recommendation in Antigua? We are going on an organized hiking trip, and will have one night on our own at the end. The outfitter uses the Hotel San Jorge, which sounds fine but characterless.

We were in Antigua last spring and stayed at the Hotel Casa Santo Domingo--- in a 400-year-old restored convent, built around several courtyards and chuch ruins. Lovely place. Historic, well-designed, pretty. Bougainvillia growing in courtyards, etc. At night they light about 1000 votive candles to light the passageways--quite magical. Nice food, atmospheric restaurant in one of the many courtyards at the hotel--I think the restaurant courtyard is partially glassed over--and it can be chilly at certain times of the year. They brought a brazier burning charcoal and sat it next to the table, imparting a dusky scent to the night air. Friendly and helpful staff. It's also a very safe and secure place---.
The Casa Santa Domingo was recommended to us by Salvadorean friends who know Antigua well---they said it's the best place and I believe them. When I go back, that's where I'll stay again. Great place (except when there's a wedding party. . . but that can happen anywhere.) Enjoy.

Update: Casa Santo Domingo is full for the night I need. I've booked a room at The Cloister, which sounds nice. After booking it, I found out that the originally-from-Boston owner is the friend of a friend.
Now I just have to figure out where in Antigua I'm going to watch the Patriots win the Super Bowl. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif

I'm going to Antigua, looking for a small b&b hotel. The Panza Verde gets excellent reviews, but it's booked for the week I'm visiting.
Did you like the Cloister? Thanks for your help.

Yes, we loved The Cloister. We were only there one night, and had to leave very early (missing breakfast), but the place is really lovely, with a great location. Highly recommended.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm staying 3 nights in November. I'll report back.

Couldn't agree more. My sister lives in Guatemala City, and I've been to Santo Domingo probably 8 or 9 times.
They make some of the best rissotto I've ever had, if you go back. ;)
