I'd say avoid driving - This is the green season. Manual Antonio is spread out - Manual Antonio Lodge is fairly decent, so is Hotel Parador - http://www.crica.com/hotels/parador.html or Punta Leona http://www.hotelpuntaleona.com/
Many hotels will arrange for a pickup at he SJO airport, use that instead of flying -
