I have some Continental miles that I need to burn. Beyond the obvious spots (Rio) what are some cool places to spend New Years Day in Latin America. I'm going solo, so some spots with cool nightlife and preferably warm temperatures would be cool!

The only place that will have an "event" (in my limited knowledge of the world) is Rio. You will find that most latin american cities celebrate New Years at home, with families. The streets of BsAs are nearly deserted for midnight on New Years. (I would expect Santiago to be even more deserted). About 2 AM, people will go out to clubs as venues start to reopen. Most cafes and restaurants, except those having a special New Years dinner, will close at 9PM on 31 Dec. I have spent New Years eve in BsAs and have departed from Santiago on New Years eve. If you choose Rio, it is truly supposed to be one of those "once in a lifetime you have to see it" events at the beach. Hotels may be horrendously expensive and rare, so book soon.
