We will be arriving in Chennai on Friday, 2nd May from Colombo at 2055hrs. We need to get to Bangalore asap-before 0600hrs the following morning. There are no night flights from MAA to BLR so our only option is to take a coach/taxi or go by train. I personally prefer trains.

I reckon that it will take us around one hour to clear immigration and customs at Chennai and another hour to get to the main train station. Is there a late night train from Chennai to Bangalore?

It looks like there's a 22:15 train that gets in 5:15 the following morning, the last train is 23:15 and gets in at 6:50 (and only runs friday night). When I went through customs at MAA last summer, it took quite a long time (at least an hour). I took the Shatabdi express to Bangalore and it was a pleasant trip. Every train I took in India left and arrived right on time.
