"No single telling of a man's story can encompass his life." That's the quote that opens Richard Attenborough's Academy Award-winning film, "Gandhi."

On that thought, I'll open my photographic travelogue on India by saying that no one article, book, film or Web site can encompass the country's vastness, richness, poverty, diversity, and natural and man-made wonders.

My wife, Susan, and I traveled to this exotic land in December and in 12 days we were in nine cities, dashing to catch planes and trains and cars and camels from dawn to dusk. We shot 74 rolls of film and filled two 128MB memory cards with digital images. Again, we lived up to our reputations as the "shoot-and-scoot" photographers.

I am sure India would be a fascinating subject for many people. Unfortunately I have not been there yet but one of these days I will make it. I have heard that the Kashmir region is just spellbinding.

I find the arts during the Moghul period exquisite and one day I will make a tour to study that in conjuction to the Saffavids and Ottomans. Visiting India, Iran and Turkey sound very enticing...maybe Tahiti can wait...

Tourists haunt new destinations

NEW DELHI
SOME unexpected destinations are showing a growth in tourism while the old favourites are showing a downtrend.

Cities like Cochin, Hyderabad, Mussourie, Patna and Vishakhapatnam have shown an increase in occupancies while Ahmedabad, Aurangabad, Chennai, Indore, Jodhpur and Shimla are going downhill.

Doc,

Did you fly Jet Airways and Indian Airlines? The former is considered a better run private company while the latter is trying to come out of state nurtured monopolistic business. There are some small players too - Sahara being the viable other.

Incidentally, SQ may buy Air India the Intnl carrier and significantly increase the network and routes to India. Let us see. We will see the news posts from you to keep in touch.
